Jan from Ohio asked:

Q: Is coconut a MUFA?

A: 1 oz. of coconut contains 9 grams of fat, 8 of which come from saturated fat—an “unhealthy fat”, so no, coconut is not a MUFA. MUFA stands for monounsaturated fat, which is a “healthy fat” known to reduce inflammation, protect your heart, ward of type 2 diabetes, lower your risk of breast cancer, and it targets belly fat loss. Thanks for your healthy weight loss question, Jan!

Q: I was wondering. Which foods should you eat to make you lose belly fat?

A: Char, thanks so much for visiting my site. I have a whole page devoted to flat belly foods. Please check it out. In addition to these foods, I recently read an article from Fitness Magazine that listed the following foods as the best foods for flat abs: eggs, soy, apples, berries, leafy greens, yogurt, veggie soup, salmon (a great source of omega-3 fatty acids), and quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah). Remember—healthy weight loss is what you are striving for and this can be achieved by eating the foods mentioned in this article. Keep track of what you are eating by using a food diary. Paula from Vermont asked:

Q: I love your site and I’ve learned a lot. Does swimming help you to lose belly fat?

A: Swimming is a fantastic exercise and it does indeed shed fat. This low impact, cardio exercise tones muscle, builds endurance, and burns calories. Remember…belly fat is just that…fat which will definitely be burned through a rigorous swimming session.

I used to swim laps (unfortunately the pool I swam in is no longer open to the public) and it didn’t take long before I noticed how effective the work out was….my love handles slimmed down very quickly.

Paula thanks for reading! I hope you give swimming a chance, it’s a great work out! When you have a chance, read more about the best abdominal exercises. These fun exercises will help you lose unwanted belly fat.
