Can you lose beer belly fat? There is link between drinking large quantities of beer and developing what is referred to as a beer belly, but it certainly isn’t the only cause of an expanding mid-section in men.

“Suds” are high caloric in nature and tend to increase the appetite of the person imbibing; however, many men that sport the large, classically shaped protruding stomach don’t drink any type of alcohol products at all.

“Okay, now I’m definitely confused. I know guys that can drink all night long, and they are slim and trim.”

It’s not really a case of drinking a brew occasionally, rather how many calories are consumed, and then subsequently burned. A diet rich in fat, carbohydrates, or high caloric processed foods will lead to weight gain in the belly (men or women), and men tend to develop the rounded bulge, where as the fat gain on women tend to be distributed between their arms, thighs, bottoms, and bellies.

A typical brewski is a high calorie beverage that is filled with “empty calories”, meaning the body gains little or no nutritional value from it. An average can contains approximately 153 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates. As you can see, night after night of heavy drinking, will most definitely lead to weight gain.

As mentioned earlier, drinking alcohol often goes hand-in-hand with eating large quantities of unhealthy foods; such as chips, hot wings, fries, and onion rings. Many bars even offer food freebees to encourage continued drinking…beware!

If you are concerned about getting rid of your large belly, as with almost everything else that relates to good health, the key is moderation. If you must imbibe, do so, but drink less. (no more than 2 a day) Switching to a lite variety (approx. 95-110 cals) will help with calorie consumption as well.

Lastly, if you are a drinker make sure to drink plenty of water and ensure that you are getting exercise several times a week.
