And what’s the Big Deal about Monounsaturated Fatty Acids ?
(I keep hearing about them everywhere)
The moniker MUFA stands for monounsaturated fatty acids and is pronounced, “MooFa”. When eaten daily these “healthy fats” help reduce stubborn belly fat. (Isn’t that exciting?)
“Sure it is…but I still don’t know what a MUFA is!”
There are 5 categories:
1. healthy oils
2. avocados
3. nuts and seeds
4. olives
5. dark chocolate
It’s probably time to tell you about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly when it comes to oils:
The Bad Guys:
Trans Fats (the really bad guys and ugly too!):
Trans fats are man-made and were created to lengthen the shelf life of processed foods. Avoid this kind of fat whenever possible!
Saturated Fats:
Saturated fats are found primarily in animal products such as dairy, meat, seafood, and eggs. Palm oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and cocoa butter all contain saturated fat as well. Eating large quantities of saturated fats are the culprits known to raise LDL cholesterol, otherwise known as the bad cholesterol, as well as total blood cholesterol. Consume these fats SPARINGLY.
On to Healthy Fats!…Healthy? Yes, healthy!
Fat consumed in large amounts will lead to weight gain and the development of certain types of cancers and other diseases. You need to make an effort to replace “bad fat” with “good fat” whenever possible.
“Say that again.”
Okay, limit your “bad fats” and increase you “good fats.” However, you can’t go totally “fat-free” because dietary fat is vital for the human body to function properly. It helps regulate the nervous system, blood pressure, blood vessel constriction, blood clotting, and heart rate. Healthy fat also helps the body absorb certain nutrients.
The Good Guys:
Become a label reader and add these to your diet:
1. Omega 3-Fatty Acids
2. Polyunsaturated Fat
3. Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA’s)
