Plus Size Shapewear: What I learned About the Spanx Hide & Sleek Criss Cross Cami

Really, this is nothing more than a little story to tell you about something I learned this summer. Read along and I’ll let you in on a little secret about losing weight and looking great…

A few weeks ago, I traveled to Spain with my friend Debbie. We had a fantastic time in a country overflowing with culture, good food, wonderful music, festivals, beautiful scenery, a rich history, and friendly people.

Oh, I forgot to mention the beautiful women. It seemed as if all the Spanish women we saw on our trip were slim, trim, and beautiful. (And for that matter, the men were in great shape too!) A bit intimidating at first, but we decided it must be in the wine, the healthy food, or maybe the sunlight. Whatever it was—we wanted to figure it out.

Our conversations focused on this topic on many occasions, and we actually started to study the people around us. We were with a large group of Spaniards for close to two weeks, and during that time, we discovered that they didn’t skimp on food at mealtime. In fact, most of the men and women we were with ate heartily, but quite differently than most Americans.

They loaded up on the healthy stuff—olives, olive oil, fresh fruits, and a huge variety of vegetables. They ate bread, but sparingly. They ate a lot of fish and small amounts of meats, and many of them had a glass of red wine with each meal.

We decided to follow suite. As they say, “When in Rome—do as the Romans do.” Okay, Rome isn’t in Spain, but I think you get the point. We made a conscience effort to eat in precisely the same manner as our hosts did.

After about a week of changed eating habits, Debbie emerged from our room, and met me out on the lawn where I was waiting for her in the shade. As I watched her approach, I noticed that she looked slimmer than usual, but I didn’t say anything, instead wondering if the Spanish way of eating was paying off.

We headed to lunch and I pushed the thought out of my head. We later went back to our room and she peeled off her shirt to reveal the tank top she was wearing and asked, “What do you think?” It all made sense, the miracle diet hadn’t caused her to shed mega pounds, but the plus size shapewear she was wearing made it look like she had.

When I asked her about it, she told me that she had bought it for the trip, but had never tried one before. The SPANX Hide & Sleek Criss Cross Cami really did a good job. Debbie said it was cool and comfortable to wear this kind of plus size shapewear, which is definitely important in Spain in the middle of the summer. I was intrigued because I had worn other body shaper products before, and loved them, but I had never tried a Cami body shaper.

Upon arriving home, we each discovered that we had lost weight on our trip. Debbie lost four pounds, and I lost three—not bad for a couple of American tourists. I also looked up some more information about the Spanx plus size shapewear, and decided to buy one for myself.

I’m still not 100% sure why the Spanish women are so thin & trim, and maybe it isn’t important. Instead, I learned how to eat healthier, and I learned about plus size shapewear that really works. Who says you can’t learn something while on vacation!

Spanx Shapewear…Dress Better to Look Better!

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I’ve been Spanx’d…okay, okay, let me explain. Three things have happened to me over the past year, which have pointed me in the right direction towards accepting my body as I worked on turning my belly fat into a flat belly…getting married, a TV show, and a product called, SPANX.

I was keenly aware that my bulging tummy wasn’t going to disappear overnight, and I actually accepted this fact, but it was still downright depressing when I tried to find and buy clothing, not to mention get dressed for work when I had a “muffin top” hanging over the top of my pants.

If you are anything like me, the solution was to wear over sized clothing in an extremely misguided attempt to cover my flaw. My belly was covered but I looked like a traveling circus. My clothing was huge. Sound familiar?

Is Spanx shapewear the solution to our bulging tummies?

Like I said, I got re-married, and my new husband is extremely supportive of me and my weight loss ups and downs. He told me, yes he told me, that my clothes were too big and actually made me look even bigger than I was.

I would argue the point by saying things like, “You don’t understand how hard it is to find clothing that fits my body.” He would politely listen but continued to encourage me to find clothing that fit. He said to me countless times, “You have to love your body now, not just dream about how it will look when you lose weight.”

In my head, I knew he was supporting me but somehow it felt like he was attacking me too. (Men and women sure think differently, don’t they?) Along the way he bought some awesome CD’s for me to listen to that helped me with my body image.

I began to sense that it was time to change and I actually started looking for clothing that fit my body. It wasn’t easy but he really helped me realize that huge baggy clothes didn’t encourage me to change. They only hid the problem.

You might laugh but a TV show also helped point me in the right direction. My husband I settled down to watch television on a Friday night almost a year ago. We decided to watch a show called, “What Not to Wear” on TLC.

Stacy & Clinton

What Not to Wear

“I just love this Show! Stacy and Clinton, If you’re reading this…pick me, pick me! I would love to learn even more about how to dress for my body type.”

Hosted by Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, two fashion experts who know exactly what they are talking about, they surprise their guests by giving them a fashion overhaul. If you haven’t seen the show, you should tune in, because they give excellent advice on how to dress every body type imaginable. I enjoy the show for the fun and spunkiness, but I pay close attention when one of the people featured on the show has a body type like mine.

Stacy and Clinton can literally make a person look ten pounds lighter by carefully picking clothing that pulls the eye away from the trouble areas, and instead accentuating the positive. I try not to miss an episode.

Lastly, I discovered SPANX. If you you’ve never heard about them before, you are probably asking yourself, “What the heck is she talking about?

Sara Blakely invented the Spanx shapewear product line that now includes: body shapers, slimming camis, hosiery, panties, and bras in both regular and plus sizes.

I was shopping at Lane Bryant and had been there for over an hour already. The sales woman and my husband were patiently handing piece after piece of clothing over the top of the dressing room door. Remember, I was trying to find clothing that fit me properly.

It was frustrating but we were finally starting to find a few things that looked good on me. At one point, I tried on a pair of slacks and yelled through the door, “This is great everywhere else but I can’t wear it because of my stomach. It sticks out too much.”

The sales woman replied, “SPANX shapewear will take care of that.”

“Spanks? What did you say? S.P.A.N.K.S?” I spelled it out slowly, in case she had lost her mind. I opened the dressing room door and cautiously stepped out. I wasn’t thrilled about anyone seeing my belly.

“No, S.P.A.N.X. You just need to try on a pair and those pants will look great on you.”

I was skeptical as I retreated into the dressing room, but she was right. Moral of the story…SPANX won’t make your belly fat go away but it will smooth you out so you look fantastic in your clothing. It’s a great first step towards loving your body! Thanks Sara!
