Weight Loss Motivation

Is your weight loss motivation where it should be? I’m sure you’re like me and have read countless of weight loss sites and blogs in your efforts to lose stubborn belly fat and drop a few pounds.

If you’re a long-time reader of a particular site, have may have noticed that many of the writers tend to be very positive at the beginning of their weight loss journeys and over time have become extremely negative or jaded if they didn’t feel they were making steady progress.

Recently I read a blog where the woman had already lost 40-something pounds, but was still about 60 pounds from reaching her goal.

I was so impressed by her efforts but I noticed that her last several posts seemed to be devoted to beating herself up over the last few weeks when she hadn’t lost anything.

She didn’t gain, she didn’t lose, and seemed to be locked in a plateau. Her kids had been sick and her husband had been away on back-to-back business trips. I felt bad for her but I could also tell that if she didn’t get her emotions in check, she would fail in her weight loss efforts all together. Sad, don’t you think?

I have coined a term for this phenomenon called simply, “life getting in the way of reaching your weight loss goals.” Many people start of with good intentions, but tend to get sidelined in their weight loss efforts for whatever reason (sickness, work schedules, family commitments, etc.) and when this begins to happen their once strong weight loss motivation starts to nosedive.

If left unchecked, they leave their weight loss goals behind in lieu of whatever happens to be pulling them off track. They lose focus and start to fail. Does this sound familiar? I bet it does. It has happened to me many, many times over the years.

This is where weight loss motivation becomes very important. Motivation is the internal drive—or force—that propels you to reach your goal, regardless of whatever obstacles are thrown into your path.

So, why do some people succeed when others fail?

I believe the weight loss winners achieve their goals through a powerful combination of self-motivation and positive self-talk. Some people are naturally stronger in this area than others, but don’t fear…this skill CAN be learned!

If you believe your self-motivation is keeping you from reaching your weight loss goals, you need to become your biggest cheerleader, especially when times get rough. Positive thinking will always help rejuvenate your efforts, while negative self-talk only serves to bring you down.

Remember this when life gets busy and crazy, as it has a tendency to sometimes do, and get back into the weight loss game by doing whatever it takes to keep yourself focused.
