Writing a Weight Loss Plan = Success
Question:
What’s a gal to do when she can’t seem to dig down deep and do what it takes to lose weight?
Answer:
Dig down deeper!
Although it’s probably not the answer you wanted to hear—it’s the truth. You and you alone are responsible for your weight; that is unless you have an eight hundred pound gorilla sitting on your chest and forcing you to eat. Since that’s a highly unlikely scenario, let’s look at what can be done to get on the path of weight loss and stay there.
Take Control:
How much weight do you want to lose? What are the steps you need take to reach your goal? What do you have to do nutritionally and physically to lose this amount of weight? In other words, you need to come up with a plan and take control of what you want to achieve.
Did you know that whenever a new business opens, prior to opening their doors and welcoming new business, they have written something called a business plan. This plan is an outline of sorts that will help guide the business owner toward success. That’s exactly what you should do too. Write a weight loss plan that not only outlines your goals but what you have to do to get there.
What Should My Weight Loss Plan Look Like?
1. Begin by writing a weight loss mission statement that includes a long-term goal but your main focus should be placed on the formulating short-term goals. These are easier to tweak and modify as needed. Also, be sure to include the reasons why you want to lose weight. This is important because sometimes when things get tough, like when you hit a plateau, it’s easy to forget what you want to achieve.
2. Keep your short-term goals small, manageable, and achievable.
3. Plan how you will incorporate exercise into your life
4. Plan your food intake. (Will you follow a certain diet?)
5. Plan how and when you will reward yourself for reaching small goals.
6. Decide how you will track your progress.
For example: How often will you weigh yourself? Who will weigh you? Do you plan on keeping a food diary? Will you take your before, during, and after measurements? What about photos? Do you plan to take pictures of yourself on your weight loss journey?
7. What “tools” will you need to purchase to achieve your goal?
For example: pedometer (I highly recommend the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer), kitchen scale, DVD’s, gym membership, etc.
8. What steps will you take when you deviate from your plan? How will you keep yourself motivated? Weight loss motivation is very important.
9. Decide if you want to enlist the help of others.
For example: join a weight loss program, find a weight loss/exercise buddy, or pinpoint who you can talk to when things get tough)
10. Sign and date your plan…this is your commitment to yourself!
As you are writing your weight loss plan, be sure to spell out exactly what you will do to reach your goal…be specific! Refer back to your plan often and make any necessary changes.
Remember the gorilla? Stress, work, family, health issues, money problems can all feel like a gorilla sitting on your chest. Don’t let these distractions keep you from reaching your weight loss goals. Write a weight loss plan…stick to it… and find success!
